The 7 best employee scheduling apps in 2026, ranked
By Jean Luc Poitier, SEO and growth marketing strategist · Connecteam Reviews · Updated November 1, 2026 · Prices checked on each vendor's pricing page
Disclosure: this site reviews Connecteam and earns a commission if you sign up for it through our links. We don't earn anything from the other six apps. We rank Connecteam first for the reasons below, and each entry says who should pick something else.
We ranked these apps for small and mid-size teams that work in shifts: how much of the daily work (scheduling, clocking in, messaging, paperwork) each one covers at its entry price, what it costs to start, and what reviewers say once they are using it. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page on 2026-11-01. The right pick depends more on your team than on the ranking, so each entry says who it fits.

The 7 best employee scheduling apps, ranked
Connecteam
Best all-in-one app for deskless teamsBest for: teams that want scheduling, a GPS time clock, chat, forms and checklists, and training in one app. Pricing: the Small Business Plan is free for up to 10 users with all three hubs (no payroll integration); paid hubs cost a flat $29 a month billed yearly ($35 monthly) for the first 30 users on the Operations Hub Basic plan, then a set price per extra user. The catch: each hub is billed separately, geofences start on Advanced ($49 yearly) and auto-scheduling and GPS breadcrumbs on Expert ($99). There is no built-in payroll and no phone support, and reviewers complain about upsells and the Always location permission.
Connecteam free vs paid →Homebase
Best for one location that wants payroll built inBest for: a single restaurant or shop with many hourly staff. Pricing is per location with unlimited employees: Basic is free for 1 location and up to 10 employees; Essentials is $24 a month billed annually ($30 monthly). Built-in, full-service US payroll costs $49 a month plus $6 per employee paid, with the first 6 months free. The catch: onboarding, e-sign, and HR tools are in All-in-One only ($96 annually, $120 monthly per location), and several locations each pay separately.
Connecteam vs Homebase →Deputy
Best for demand-based scheduling across sitesBest for: multi-site and enterprise operations that want auto-scheduling, demand forecasting, and wage budgets (Core plan and up). Pricing is per user: Lite $5 annually ($5.50 monthly), Core $6.50 ($7.25), Pro $9 ($10), with a $30 monthly minimum per invoice on monthly plans. No free plan; the trial runs up to 31 days with no card. The catch: every admin and manager counts as a user, annual plans can't be downgraded or refunded, and its unprompted Trustpilot reviews are far lower than its invited ones (1.25 vs 4.47).
Connecteam vs Deputy →7shifts
Best for restaurantsBest for: restaurants that want tip pooling, labor forecasting, and payroll from a restaurant-only vendor. Pricing is per location: the free Comp plan covers 1 location and up to 15 employees; Essentials is $39.99 a month annually ($44.99 monthly) and caps at 30 employees. The catch: labor compliance tools start on Pro ($79.99 a month annually), tip and task management on Premium ($134.99), 7shifts says prices are subject to change, and in 2025 it cut the free plan to 20 and then 15 employees.
Connecteam vs 7shifts →When I Work
Best for simple per-user schedulingBest for: teams that mainly need a schedule employees can see and swap on their phones. Pricing is per user: Essentials $2.50, Pro $5, Premium $8 a month; the page doesn't say whether those are annual or monthly rates. 14-day trial, no card, no public free plan. The catch: time tracking and attendance is an add-on ($1.50 to $2 more per user), payroll now points to a Rippling partnership, and there are too few Trustpilot reviews (6) to judge from.
Connecteam vs When I Work →Sling
Best free scheduling for up to 30 usersBest for: teams that need free shift scheduling and messaging for up to 30 users. Paid Premium adds the time clock and geofencing for $1.70 per user a month annually ($2 monthly); Business is $3.40 ($4). Sling is owned by Toast. The catch: the free plan has no time clock, and its 100 newest Google Play reviews average 2.66 (Jun 29 to Sep 27, 2026) against 3.48 for Connecteam's 200 newest in the same pull.
Connecteam vs Sling →Jibble
Best free time clockBest for: teams whose main need is time tracking. Jibble's free plan covers unlimited users with GPS and facial recognition clock-in, kiosk mode, leave tracking, and payroll-ready timesheets, and it can build shifts and rosters. The catch: it has no team chat, no forms or training, and its paid-plan prices are no longer published (its pricing page now redirects to the homepage).

How the scheduling apps' reviews compare
Overall review scores mostly show whether a company asks its customers for reviews, so we compare like for like. On Trustpilot, the most recent reviews each company collected through its own review links averaged 4.67 for Connecteam (49 reviews, Sep 21 to 29, 2026), 4.55 for Jibble (49, Jun 24 to Sep 30, 2026), 4.47 for Deputy (30, Aug 2024 to Sep 2026), 4.22 for Homebase (93, Jul 14 to Sep 30, 2026), and 3.61 for 7shifts (31, Apr 2023 to Sep 2026). Trustpilot labels Connecteam's link reviews “unprompted”, but they came through a link the company shares.
Unprompted reviews run far lower where there are enough to count: 1.25 for Deputy (20 reviews), 1.16 for 7shifts (19), and 3.86 for Homebase (7). Connecteam and Jibble had one each in our samples, When I Work five, and Sling has no Trustpilot reviews, so those are too few to compare. On Capterra, all seven sit between 4.5 and 4.8: Jibble 4.8 (2,382 reviews), 7shifts 4.7 (1,212), Connecteam 4.6 (5,322), Homebase 4.6 (1,156), Deputy 4.6 (773), Sling 4.6 (212), and When I Work 4.5 (1,300). Our methodology page explains how we pull and count reviews.
Why Connecteam ranks first among scheduling apps
Connecteam is the only app here whose free plan combines scheduling, a GPS time clock with geofences, team chat, forms, and training courses, and its paid price stays flat up to 30 users per hub. It also leads the invited-review comparison above. It isn't the cheapest option for one large location (Homebase and 7shifts charge per location), it has no built-in payroll, and its costs add up when you need the higher tiers on all three hubs. The free vs paid breakdown shows where the line falls, and Connecteam alternatives covers the cases where another app fits better. If you are building your first schedule, start with how to make an employee schedule.
Employee scheduling apps FAQ
What is the best employee scheduling app?+
For most small shift teams that want scheduling, a time clock, and team chat in one app, we rank Connecteam first; it is free for up to 10 users. Homebase is the better pick for one location that wants built-in payroll, Deputy for demand-based scheduling across many sites, and 7shifts for restaurants.
What is the best free employee scheduling app?+
It depends on team size. Connecteam's Small Business Plan is free for up to 10 users with scheduling, a GPS time clock, and chat. Sling schedules up to 30 users free, without a time clock. 7shifts' free Comp plan covers 1 location and up to 15 employees, Homebase Basic 1 location and up to 10. Jibble's free time clock has no user limit.
Which scheduling apps have built-in payroll?+
Homebase sells full-service US payroll as an add-on ($49 a month plus $6 per employee paid, first 6 months free), and 7shifts runs its own 7shifts Payroll. Deputy offers payroll enabled by Paycor on annual Core and Pro plans in the US. Connecteam, Sling, and Jibble integrate with payroll providers instead, and When I Work now promotes Rippling.
Is per-user or per-location pricing cheaper?+
Per-location pricing (Homebase, 7shifts) is usually cheaper for one large location because the price doesn't grow with headcount. Per-user pricing (Deputy, When I Work, Sling) suits small teams. Connecteam charges a flat price for the first 30 users per hub, then per extra user, which sits in between.
